We can hardly realise the feelings of Christopher on the eve of his

so divided and reduced that the traveller need never be very long out of
touch with his home, few people can set out on a long voyage without some
emotional disturbance, however slight it may be; and to Columbus on this

had been the scene of so many delays and difficulties and vexations, must
have seemed suddenly dear and familiar to him as he realised that after
to-morrow its busy and well-known scenes might be for ever a thing of the
past to him. Behind him, living or dead, lay all he humanly loved and
cared for; before him lay a voyage full of certain difficulties and
dangers; dangers from the ships, dangers from the crews, dangers from
the weather, dangers from the unknown path itself; and beyond them, a
twinkling star on the horizon of his hopes, lay the land of his belief.
That he meant to arrive there and to get back again was beyond all doubt
his firm intention; and in the simple grandeur of that determination the
weaknesses of character that were grouped about it seem unimportant. In
this starlit hour among the pine woods his life came to its meridian;
everything that was him was at its best and greatest there. Beneath him,
on the talking tide of the river, lay the ships and equipment that
represented years of steady effort and persistence; before him lay the
pathless ocean which he meant to cross by the inner light of his faith.
What he had suffered, he had suffered by himself; what he had won, he had
won by himself; what he was to finish, he would finish by himself.

Left Kshgar (21st March), Yangi-Hissar, Kaskas?Pass, descent to Chihil
Gumbaz (forty Domes), where the road branches off to Yrkand (110 miles),
Torut Pass, Tangi-Tr (defile), to the foot of a great elevated slope
leading to the Chichiklik Pass, plain, and lake (14,700 feet), below the
Ymbulk and Kok-Moinok Passes, which are used later in the season on the
road between Yangi-Hissr and Sirikol, to avoid the Tangi-Tr and Shindi
defiles. As the season advances, these passes become free from snow, while
the defiles are rendered dangerous and difficult by the rush of the
melting snow torrents. From the Chichiklik plain we proceeded down the
Shindi ravine, over an extremely bad stony road, to the Sirikol River, up
the banks of which we travelled to Tshkurgn, reaching it on the tenth
day from Yangi-Hissar. The total distance is 125 miles. Then Tshkurgn
(ancient name _Vrshdi_): the open part of the Sirikol Valley extends
from about 8 miles below Tshkurgn to apparently a very considerable
distance towards the Kunjt mountain range; left Tshkurgn for Wkhan
(2nd April, 1873); leave Sirikol Valley, enter the Shindn defile, reach
the ktsh Valley, follow the ktsh stream (called ks?by the Kirghiz)
through the Little Pamir to the Ghzkul (Little Pamir) Lake or Barkat
Yssn, from which it takes its rise, four days from Tshkurgn. Little
Pamir is bounded on the south by the continuation of the Neza Tsh range,
which separates it from the Tghdngbsh Pmir, west of the lake, Langar,
Sarhadd, 30 miles from Langar, and seven days from Sirikol, and Kila Panj,

Latin, is an expression on which no light has been thrown since Ramusios
time. The latter often asked the Persian merchants who visited Venice, and
they all agreed in stating that it was a sort of steel of such surpassing
value and excellence, that in the days of yore a man who possessed a
mirror, or sword, of _Andanic_ regarded it as he would some precious
jewel. This seems to me excellent evidence, and to give the true clue to
the meaning of _Ondanique_. I have retained the latter form because it
points most distinctly to what I believe to be the real word, viz.
_Hundwny_, Indian Steel.[1] (See _Johnsons Pers. Dict._ and _De
Sacys Chrestomathie Arabe_, II. 148.) In the _Vocabulista Arabico_, of
about A.D. 1200 (Florence, 1871, p. 211), _Hunduwn_ is explained by
_Ensis_. Vllers explains _Hundwn_ as anything peculiar to India,
especially swords, and quotes from Firdsi, _Khanjar-i-Hundwn_, a
hanger of Indian steel.

fermentation is commencing it is violently churned with a peculiar staff
which constantly stands in the vessel. This interrupts fermentation and
